As a mother you always wonder are the lessons of beauty, strength, and courage being heard by your children, especially your daughters. And then like a wrecking ball, instead of them saying it has they show you.
My daughter Airis is an artist. She uses her art as a form of self expression (wonder where she gets it from), and this morning on my way to work she sends me a link to video she produced with her cousins, a lip sync to the song "Fight Song" created with her own definition of what this song means. In this video they are tearing up the words: ugly, different, and freak. Words that are often used when bullying other kids (something a 12 year deals with at school). This video is like a declaration of what it means to stand up for yourself, being unique as a person.
I'm having such a #proudmom moment and was crying the most ugly tears the world has ever seen watching the video as I walk into the gym.
I've said this before and I'll say it again: we need to teach our young women how to be brave, not perfect. We need to teach them what it means to be strong and how to have courage when it comes to facing their fears. Watch the video linked and be kind. She's a young lady who has big dreams to become a producer at Pixar one day.
