Let me first start off by saying that I was always a bit of a skeptic when it came to essential oils. I've heard the whole spiel that everyone gives you when they first fall in love with their essential oils and every single time I have my arms crossed in front of my chest like, NOPE NOPE NOPE! You've probably heard it all before too so I wont go into the fact that essential oils is something that has been around for a very long time. It's not a new holistic healing practice everyone used to use it before western medicine came around. Blah blah blah... It's sorta funny because the first time I was introduced to it I just remember thinking "Geez what is this new age hippy shit that everyone's into." And then I got hooked.
I've always believed that your overall healthy is mind, body, and soul. But it wasn't until about 6 months ago when I started to really look into essential oils and what it can do for me and my family. Chances are you probably have friends who are slanging essential oils too. The most popular brands are Young Living and doTERRA. When I began my research on essential oils I was overwhelmed with which brand of oil to commit to. Their stories both sounded the same and neither of those brands felt right for me to commit to. Last fall I stumbled upon my friend Aerial's post on her diffuser and decide to pick up my own. I started to diffused Wild Orange essential oils because I was obsessed with the grapefruit candles SoulCycle burns in their studios and it was a scent that always brought a sense of happiness and productivity to me. After that I was hooked.
I started to search and hunt for different essential oils and companies that were focused on essential oils and discovered Saje Wellness on Instagram. I have to admit that it was this beautiful marble diffuser that I fell in love with and had to pick up my own. Now I had a diffuser for our living room area and my bedroom. Our house was covered.
What I love about Saje Wellness is that they've simplified the way you can incorporate essential oils into your life. They offer kits with diffuser blends so that you're not having to figure out which oils to mix in to your diffuser and the exact ratio of drops to get a particular aromatherapy treatment right. I also own the Happiness kit which has a citrus blend called Citrus Dream which I love to diffuse on the weekends while play in bed on slow Sunday morning.
I've gotten my daughter Olivia to diffuse essential oils with me in the evening and that all started in the fall when she would come home all wound up and high energy from school. She couldn't relax in bed so we started to diffuse lavender essential oils in her room. She even has her own little set up right next to her bed.
Despite having all these essential oils providing us with aromatherapy in the past few months I still wasn't convinced with its true healing power until I got my husband trying Peppermint Halo one afternoon while he was complaining about a headache. We both watched a video on Saje Breath and tried it. After trying that technique with Peppermint Halo my husband looked at me and said, "I think this might help me quit smoking." I couldn't have been happier in that moment because my husband has been smoking cigarettes for 18 years and in all his attempts to quit with patches, gum, cold turkey, and other techniques nothing made him instantaneously say those words that confidently.
Tips on Incorporating Essential Oils Into Your Life:
- Let your nose be your guide. Find essential oils that you naturally gravitate to. When I first started looking into essential oils, I went to Whole Foods to check out their essential oil collection and to do a little recon to find out what my body liked best. Your body is an incredible machine and if you listen to the queues you'll know what it needs based on your senses.
- Diffuse them in your air. The easiest way to get into using essential oils is to diffuse them in your home or in the car or office. Pick up a small diffuser such as this the Aromaroam, which powers up with a USB cord.
- Start off in baby steps. Use topical oils before you begin ingesting them or using them through out your house. I haven't quite graduated to the point where I'm using them for cooking essentials or using it to clean my house, but I've heard a lot of people who have. I'll get there one day (maybe) but for now I'm enjoying using essential oils during my massage and applying them on my body during my meditation and breathing techniques and its done wonders so far for my stress levels.
- Create a simple wellness ritual. When I first started using essential oils I diffused it during my short quick meditation sessions. The scent of the essential oils helped with my mindful breathing practice.
