How to manifest your own reality

Did you know that you have the ability to manifest your own reality?

The first time someone told me this several years ago I thought “ummm go somewhere with that woo woo...” 🙅🏽‍♀️ But the last couple of years has really taught me to open up my mind, heart, and whole self to the idea that manifesting our desired reality is possible and it starts with conscious decisions. As I sit here on set I can’t help but think about the steps I used to manifest my dreams and I wanted to share them with you.⠀⠀⠀⠀

1. Have a vision.

You don’t have to know the exact plans, but have a vision for what you desire and get specific. Last year I wrote a list of goals: personal and professional that were extremely specific. So write down 10-20 specific things you desire. These can be little dreams or big dreams. Me personally, I like to think expansively and large and tend to write down dreams that are out there, after-all anything is possible.

2. Ask the universe.

Meditation and prayer are definitely keys to having a clear line to the universe, our highest selves, God, or whatever you believe in, but what I mean about asking the universe is to talk bravely about your goals or dreams. We often times keep our dreams to ourselves because of fear of judgment. It’s vulnerable to share our desires, but the ability to speak openly and bravely about desires gives the universe an opportunity to help align you and your goals with the right people or experiences that can help you get to what you desire.

3. Get intentional about your actions.

Work towards your vision even if you don’t have the exact plan. When you get focused and intentional, you tell energy where to go. While there’s nothing wrong with getting distracted from time to time, keep in mind our dreams require a certain amount of energy. Ask yourself where is my energy being directed to?

4. Trust the process and have a strong belief in your desires.

We all have self-doubt, no one is immune to it. But if you lack the belief in your dreams even by one bit then chances are you’re blocking your own manifestation. Dig deep and try to understand where the self doubt is coming from or where it stems from so that you can change it.

5. Be grateful and keep your vibrations high!

Gratitude keeps us in a present state of mind when we’re actively working towards our desires. This is so important because every step you take towards your desires is a growth opportunity to learn from. Some lessons or challenges may not work out the way we expected, but it can keep your vibrations high by focusing on gratitude then you can stay unattached to the outcome.

One of the things we loved about our new home was the fact that we had a backyard. Our old place was a 3 story town home unit that had a small patio deck that was also home to the AC unit for the house. We had a pool as part of that housing community, which was great when we wanted to be outdoors enjoying the summer months, but nothing beats having a backyard for the kids to play in and the dog to run around freely.

I was recently on a panel speaking about my career journey and I had said something along the lines of “we as the women today are in such an incredible time and place where we can be the example to our younger generation of women of how to exercise our own power with love and grace to manifest change in our lives.”

As a mother of two young daughters I remember feeling both afraid and empowered to be raising two beautiful women in this crazy modern world. It’s definitely no easy task especially with all the that’s been happening with women’s rights lately. But for me that meant I had the ability to help construct a whole new set of rules or guideposts for them to live by, and that is empowering in itself.

Growing up my parents never spoke to me about bravery, courage, and the power of using my voice. I’m not sure if it was because I was a child of immigrant parents or if it was merely because they grew up in the time where it was the cultural norm for women to conform to all of society’s values instead of redefining their own.

One of the things we’ve been doing a home a lot lately is defining our values on a deeper level. We’ve been asking ourselves how we want to live and lead our lives here at home for ourselves and for those around us. One of the things I challenge my girls with high-mileage questions so that they can investigate their thoughts around that answer and define something that is more authentic to them.

I asked my girls what does power mean to them. Olivia had answered “Power to me is being strong and independent.” Hearing this answer made my heart sing because independence is one of those characteristics I value in people and to hear my 8 year old girl use that as a way to describe power tugged on my heart strings. My eldest Airis said, “To be powerful is to be strong and a good leader.” The moment she said a good leader, I thought WOW! These girls are so empowered and filled with integrity. They also understand that everyone’s definition of powerful is unique to that person and it doesn’t diminish another person’s perspective of it. In fact they choose to learn from the differences rather than distance themselves from the other person.

Power to me means

being a good leader.

Every girl deserves to know that she matters, she has a voice, and that voice can change the world around her. Here are some ways that you can strike up a conversation that helps her find ways to use her power.

Acknowledge that she is already powerful.

I cannot stress the importance of positive reinforcement and acknowledging the strength each person has inside, especially a young girl. Acknowledging one’s personal strength and power provides a strong foundation of self worth that they can continue to build on as they grow.








Power is honesty when it comes from a place of love.

Honesty and truth turns pain into power, but only when it comes from a pure place of love as the intention. When our voices are used in a malicious manner it doesn’t serve our highest purpose and only causes destruction.

Help her find a version of power that works for her.

There are so many different examples of female leaders who are strong, independent, and powerful in their voice. Some are introverts, others are extroverts, and there are plenty of women in different industries leading in different ways. Allowing them to see different examples gives them space to create an ideal version of what might work for themselves.


Ask her to define power.

Power is not about having control over a situation or person. It is however about having the influence to create positive change. Make sure to help her understand that her words matter and her actions can impact others.

JUST ASK JO is back! I skipped a week or two because of travel and I've got a ton of questions to get back to and I promise I will, but I needed a bit of a break. If you follow me on Instagram you'll know I had a bit of a mental meltdown and truthfully I think I'm still in the works of rewiring myself so that I can prevent them from happening. This week I'm answering questions about motivation and how I manage to get myself going for the day.

Two years ago I wrote a blog post on 10 Ways to Slay the Day, a lot of those are still something that I refer back to you these days when it comes to my day, but ultimately what keeps me motivated is to remember my WHY

When I first started this fitness journey I had a goal and that was to be the healthiest version of myself in my 30s both mentally and physically. I definitely think that when we remind ourselves of our why or our intention we're able to connect our values with our actions and then it slowly turns into a habit. It's ok to have setbacks, we all do. I've been through many ups and downs in this health journey of mine and there have even been moments where I've felt as if I failed to keep myself in shape after my competition days. But at the end of it all, I'm still the healthiest and happiest version of myself. 

Along with remembering YOUR WHY here are some other helpful tips to get you going in the morning. 

1. Get an extra hour of sleep.

Sleep is probably the most underrated tool used in our own well-being. We're so stuck in this culture of go go go, that we often forget to rest. I'm guilty of this too, but sleep is key! I always set the intention of heading to bed by 10 PM. It doesn't always happen, but I do my best to try. 

2. Prepare all the things you need for a successful morning the night before. 

When I worked my 9-5 corporate job, I would pack all the food I needed to bring to the office, my change of clothes in my gym bag, and I would go to bed with fresh workout gear or lay it out on top of my dresser or by the side of my bed in order for me to just grab it and change into it. This just helped me from wasting precious time in the morning.

3. Don't hit the snooze button. 

As painful as it is to have your alarm waking you up at 4:30 AM or 5:00 AM, don't hit the snooze button. Creating habits takes time and you've got to give yourself the opportunity to make that turn that small change into a habit. Studies say it takes 66 days to turn a new behavior into something automatic, so don't give up after the first week if you really want to make this morning routine an integrated part of your life. 

4. Ask for support!

This one was probably the hardest one for me to do. When I worked at VSCO I would commute over 30 miles to get to work and sometimes during the thick of commuter hours I would sit in traffic for up to 90 minutes. It sucked and after almost 2.5 years of silently dealing with the frustrations, I turned to my husband for some advice and help. He generously took over the morning routine with our girls, which allowed me to get up at 5AM before commuter hours to get my gym time in before work. 

5. Create a morning ritual that works for YOU.

A few weeks ago I experienced a mini mental meltdown. I realized it was caused by the lack of putting myself first before all the other responsibilities in my life. I wasn't practicing what I preached and needed to create a new morning ritual that worked for this stage in my life. Morning rituals allow you to settle into your day. It's an opportunity to set your intentions, write down your top priorities for your day, and simply DO YOU!

Remember this: success is nothing more than a few disciplines practiced daily.  You got this babe!
