My Experience using CBD

Cannabidiol, better known as CBD, is everywhere! I've been seeing them a lot in the form of tinctures, topical ointments, and now you'll slowly start to see it in skincare.

What is CBD?

CBD or cannabidiol is a compound found in both hemp and marijuana plants. It's a cannabinoid that interacts with the electro-chemical signaling system in your nerves called the endocannabinoid system. These cell receptors can be triggered by the plant based cannabinoid, CBD. The Endocannabinoid system regulates and harmonizes the body's natural immune system, pain, sleep, mood, and more. Which is why you'll see a wide range of benefits from CBD from reducing inflammation to boosting one's mood.

CBD Products come in many different forms: oils, pills, creams, lip balms, ointments, chocolate, infused into honey, and so many more. As I mentioned you'll soon be seeing it in skincare too.

Hemp vs. Cannabis

You'll find Hemp based CBD and Cannabis based CBD and to be honest there's an incredible amount of contradicting information on which one is better. Hemp is the male plant and marijuana is the female plant, both are from the same species, cannabis. Hemp is completely different from marijuana in its function, cultivation, and application. In its application, hemp and marijuana serve completely different purposes. Marijuana, as it is widely known, is used for medicinal or recreational purposes. Hemp is used in a variety of other applications that marijuana couldn’t possibly be used in. (source) Hemp is typically grown for industrial use and has lower traces of THC. So which one is better? According to Franjo Grotenhermen, former Chairman of the International Association For Cannabinoid Medicines "the human body does not care where the molecule comes from." (source)

But of course, keep in mind your state laws. Marijuana is still illegal in certain states which means access to CBD might be different from one state to the next. There are 17 states with laws specifically about legal CBD. Learn more here.  While CBD’s legality may be complex in theory, you can purchase it with no legal worries at all and no need for a prescription.

I started using CBD because of my shoulder pain.  A few years ago when it was terribly inflamed I couldn't sleep. The pain had been going on for weeks and the lack of sleep was starting to affect my mood, my day, and my workouts. One night, my husband let me use his marijuana vape and it put me to ease and allowed me to sleep for the first time in what felt like weeks. But that was only something I could use at night since it immediately put me to sleep. However during the day I needed something else which was when I first discovered Bloom Farms

Bloom Farms Highlighter Pens

Bloom Farms is a cannabis-based company who makes marijuana-based products including a 3:1 CBD. Highlighter pens work by vaporizing the cannabis oil. Bloom Farm's cannabis oils are concentrated and do not contain any VG, PEG or artificial flavors or terpenes. Cannabis used in all Bloom Farm products is from CA and grown responsibly from family farms. They are also a 1 for 1 company. For every Bloom Farm product purchased, they donate a meal to a food-insecure family or individual in need. You can only get these pens at select medical dispensaries.

The different colored highlighters represent the different strains of marijuana in the pen. The Blue one is the CBD 3:1. White is for daytime which includes a Sativa strain (more uplifting pairs well with activity, social gatherings, and creative projects), black has the Indica strain (more sedating, perfect for relaxing), and rose gold is a hybrid of Sativa and Indica.

MY THOUGHTS: This product was my first experience with CBD and the first time I heard about CBD. Bloom Farms did an excellent job of formulating the oils and highlighter to release the perfect dosage. The nighttime pens gave me the relief and relaxation I needed at night and the hybrid pens were the right balance of the two for me to us during the day while working on stressful deadlines.

PAIN RELIEF: The 3:1 CBD gave me the pain relief I needed within 15 minutes with little to no psychoactive effects. The moment I was sold on using CBD for any sort of medical relief was when I was in bed one day with terrible nausea from something I must have eaten. My husband was on a shoot and I mentioned to him how terrible I was doing that day and he reminded me of my CBD highlighter, one hit of the pen and in 15 minutes nausea, I was experiencing all day was gone!

COST: $45 USD for the complete set (pen + catridge) Replacement oils are $30

  • Vaping CBD is the most bioavailable form of ingestion meaning its 50% more effective than orally consuming
  • dosage of CBD is more controlled
  • Sleek design
  • not recommended for someone who has a lung condition
  • can cause coughing fits
  • battery has to be charged for usage

Cordial Organics focuses on clean beauty extracting their CBD from organic hemp using a CO2 process which means its one of the cleanest forms of CBD extract. I was sent both the Restore stick and Balance tinctures to try.

MY THOUGHTS: I love the Restore stick! I use it on my upper back to help relax the tension between my shoulder blades which is extremely helpful on days I shoot weddings. I've also used this on days prior to workouts on heavy leg days to help release my muscles for proper muscle activation.  It does have camphor which is known for its pain relief benefits. I thought at first this could be from the camphor, but the relief I got was a little more long term.

Balance ($48 USD) was the first tincture I tried. It has a slight hint of lemon and mint in it so I would only suggest to mix it into drinks that pair well with those two flavor notes. As far as the pain relief goes with this, I didn't really feel much of a difference. As far as anxiety goes, I felt calmer.

TreatWell specializes in non-psychoactive options for medicating with cannabis including CBD ratios and the raw, acidic compounds such as CBDA, THCA, and THC. There are studies that say the synergy of both THC and CBD compliment their mutual analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and other medically beneficial effects. (source) These other compounds targets specific parts of the body while CBD minimizes the psychoactive effects.

I picked up TreatWell Wellness at Harborside, when I was looking to pick up more Bloom Farms cartridges. Harborside carried the CBD rich tinctures from TreatWell but I wanted to see what the difference was taking a full spectrum cannabis tincture. Wellness by TreatWell has 10% THC and 900mg of cannabinoids, more than the tincture from Cordial Organics.

MY THOUGHTS: After taking a full dropper of Wellness ($75) in about 10 minutes my body felt relaxed, my mind felt calmer, more focused, and more energized. I was in full on zen mode both body and mind. I didn't feel any of the effects that THC normally has which was great because I was able to fully function throughout the day.

We picked up 20:1 Pet cannabis tinctures to help Zoey relax more in our new house. After 2 hours, what is normally my hyper boxer was a chill, zoned out, and relaxed pup who just wanted to lay on her bed. This was perfect for her since she still has her torn CCL.

Both products were pretty pricey, but I would definitely buy them again.

SCENTS-O-MIA Herbal Comfort Cream

Scents- O-Mia infuses herbal and cannabis-infused topical relief for muscle soreness, tightness, joint discomfort, sprains, and bruises. It is cannabis-infused so you'll need to see if your local medical dispensary carries this.

MY THOUGHTS: Expect a strong scent of cannabis when you open the jar followed by peppermint, an interesting scent combo. Using this after a long tiring day for muscle soreness and relief has been amazing. Its consistency is like a lotion so its absorbed by the skin much better than a salve. My only one gripe about this product is that there's no information on how much cannabis oil is in the product or if it's CBD based or what. I picked it up based on a recommendation and I like it, but I personally love to know how much CBD I'm infusing into my body. I don't think I'd buy it again.

Mowellens was kind enough to to send me several of their products to try and I couldn't be happier with their products. So I'll break it down below.

Lit from Within ($64.99 USD)

MY THOUGHTS: It's flavorless and made out of all the good oils: coconut, avocado, pumpkin seed, and hemp extract. I added this into my CBD Protein Ball recipe. After a few drops I felt calm, collected, and grounded.

As for pain relief, I didn't really anticipate this doing much and truthfully I'd been better with my yoga and mobility practice while I was taking this so I didn't notice much difference. However, I did noticed that while I was taking this for a week that my muscles didn't feel as sore or tired after an intense leg day.

I'd definitely keep my house stocked with this!

The Keepers Stash ($65.99)

MY THOUGHTS: I'm currently putting this on nearly everything: on top of toast, in my tea, and into my matcha. When I add this to my food I feel like I'm less irritable and calmer. I almost feel a bit more care-free especially when I'm dealing with all the things I'm juggling with between work and motherhood at home.

It's pretty pricey like most CBD products and truthfully if I had to choose between Lit From Within and The Keeper's Stash, I would go with the Lit From Within.

Mowellens One For All 100ml ($68.99 USD)

MY THOUGHTS: This topical wellness oil has been the partner to my gua sha, a natural alternative therapy that has helped break up excessive fascia on my body. The tools I use are by SideKick. Since I couple both of these together I'm not 100% sure which one is provided the most pain relief of the two, but what I do know is that coupled together these two have been working on a much deeper pain relief for me. I'm going to start using the One For All on my facial gua sha next week so I'll keep you posted on that.

What I do love about Mowellens is that all their products are high quality, beautiful branding (which I'm a sucker for), and they are transparent about their ingredients and technical information on each product they offer. Not to mention the high dosage of hemp extract in each of their products. It's a company founded by a woman, which is always something I try to support. If you're looking for CBD recipes they've got a few on their Journal. Out of all the CBD I've tried I could see myself keeping Mowellens stocked in my house and I'd probably keep coming back for more.

In Conclusion...

I'M OBSESSED! I 100% support the plant healing power of cannabis and CBD. I've never felt addicted to any of the products I've tried and its enhanced my life in so many ways. I've recommended it to friends and to some coaching clients to try while dealing with their own pain, inflammation, or anxiety issues. Of course, the effects are always different based on the person and product. It's been my substitute for traditional pain relief medications and unless I deal with something more severe I don't think I'll be going back.

What are your thoughts on CBD? Do you use it? Which ones have you tried? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
