How to Get the Kids Into a Back to School Routine

Thank you to JCPenney and Shopstyle for sponsoring this post.

School is back in session! As a Mom who works at home it’s been lovely to be able to spend flexible time with my girls at home for the summer. At the same time...I am so ready! I’m looking forward to everyone having a structured routine and my house being a little quieter during the day.

I am excited for them though! Airis is heading in sophomore year and Olivia is going to be a fourth grader. We’re all getting a little anxious and excited. It’s time to start winding back into a routine that we can take with us into the new school year.

We’re implementing this in 5 ways:

1. Tackle the Sleep Schedule (Morning & Bedtime)

The girls have been staying up past their regular school bedtime all summer which is totally fine with us. I have a teenager who sleeps in and a young one that gets up earlier, whatever works for them is fine with me. But when September comes around and they are both forced into the 7am wake up call it can be a stark adjustment which leads to tired and cranky kids, and a weakened immune system. No one wants to have sick kids after week one of school!

I’m getting the girls back into a normal routine by slowly scaling bedtime back to their normal times. 9:00PM lights out for OIivia and since Airis is a teenager, she has a little more flexibility.

2. Back to School Shopping

A little back to school shopping is definitely motivating for everyone! It sets to tone for a fresh year. Whether you have boys that are pumped about the new sneakers or backpack, or girls that are into the new trends and perfect outfits, shopping will get everyone excited.

Airis is coming into her own style and fashion sense and I love seeing her self expression come through as she gets older. She’s gotten into hoodies and classic sneakers like the adidas VI Court Sneakers.

Olivia seems to be picking up her style sense from me. She’s a bit sportier than Airis and loves to be in clothes she can easily run around in on the playground. We get typically like to pick her up an assortment of cotton t-shirts and she loves ones with graphics and positive messaging just like her mama. She’s often in joggers because it keeps her warm in the morning and its loose enough to keep her cool in the afternoon. The adidas Grand Court K unisex sneaker is one of her personal favorites becaues she can wear it with jeans and her athletic apparel.

JCPenney is definitely a favorite in our household since they totally cover the bases with their trendy options and range of sizes for kids and adults. The prices for brand name items are hard to beat and we definitely find consistent price drops of 50% or more which makes it easy on the budget. You guys know I’m an adidas girl and they have so many sweet adidas options, I love seeing my girls rock the brand too.

Plus JCPenney is having a back to school for the whole family sale and featuring 25% off adidas from now until 8/18 2019.

3. Pick Up School Supplies

No one wants to be the kid in class on Day 1 without the crayons. Well maybe it’s not that big of a deal. You and the kids will most likely feel more at ease if you pick up the annual supplies in advance!

Don’t feel like everything needs to be new! For kids this can be a difficult conversation but talk with them about recycling, sustainability, and waste. Put a positive spin on their re-use! Empower them to go through their own teacher-provided supplies list, set out things they already have and highlight what they absolutely need.

4. Establishing Their Morning Roles

Morning time can be hectic. Everyone is getting ready, eating breakfast while packing lunch, and the hubby and I are racing for the last cup of coffee or matcha. To help combat the chaos it’s important and totally fine to put some responsibility on your children! Make it clear what they are responsible for in the morning, obviously this will be age dependant. If you are used to making their lunches but you think they can tackle it on their own then maybe this year would be a great year to transition!

Let them know that you expect them to pack their lunch. Assure them that they you will be there to stock the fridge and pantry with healthy snacks and ingredients for them.

Other roles and responsibilities might be:

  • setting an alarm (the night before)

  • getting dressed (or setting out an outfit out the night before)

  • brushing teeth/hair before bed

  • putting away their own laundry

5. Write New (school) Year Resolutions Together

August and September months kind of feel like the New Year right?! The lax vibes of summer are coming to an end and many of us, whether in school or not, are ready for a fresh routine and anticipating the possibilities of the rest of the year. Sitting down with your kids and goal setting shouldn’t feel like a punishment or too serious, it’s a fun activity to allow them to do some introspection of their past school year and the year ahead.

Setting goals can also help them stay on track throughout the year. If they miss the mark on something it’ll help open up a valuable conversation around it. Post the list in their bedroom so they can refer back to it as they progress. Then in January, the New Year would be a great time to reassess and write some new goals or intentions!

School is right around the corner or already here for some of you! I hope you have fun implementing some of these tips and getting back into the school routine in a sustainable way that makes the whole year run smoothly! Would love to hear your tips in the comments below!

Hilton Aruba Wellness Travel Hotel Review

Hilton Aruba Wellness Travel Hotel Review

I was lucky enough to be able to experience some of the wellness offerings at Hilton Aruba, one of the 10 hotel resorts that Hilton has to offer in the Caribbean. It was my first visit to Aruba and although I didn’t have much time to plan for this trip there were plenty of things to do on the hotel property and in the surrounding area that gave me a chance to explore and fulfill all the areas of my personal wellness journey that’s important to me.

How Self Reflection Can Help You Smile

Do you remember a time when opinions of others didn’t matter? Hmmm...what was that answer?

No...me neither.

The older I get the less time I seem to have, and when I do find the time I really feel the necessity to invest in taking care of myself by slowing down and hitting the pause button. It’s so easy to fall into the trap, get caught up with what other people are doing, and how they’re living their life. Sadly, what screws us up the most in our life is this picture in our head of how it’s supposed to be.

One day it just clicks… you realize what’s important and what isn’t. You learn to care less about what other people think of you and more about what you think of yourself. You realize how far you’ve come and you remember when you thought things were such a mess that you would never recover. And you SMILE. You smile because you are truly proud of yourself and the person you’ve fought to become.

You learn to care less about what other people think of you and more about what you think of yourself. You realize how far you’ve come and you remember when you thought things were such a mess that you would never recover.

Anxiety happens when we worry about the future, planning for it, and trying to predict it, as if figuring it out now will cushion the blow. The thing is the future is always changing and will always be a place of uncertainty and fear. But the future can also be the home of our wildest dreams and hopes. Don’t hold yourself back because of something you cannot control, instead adapt. The quicker you can learn to adapt and redirect time and energy the easier it become to get things things you value in life accomplished. Looking back at the past only causes us to ruminate over things we cannot change. Give yourself grace. Failures are an opportunity for us to reflect on what we did and how we failed, so we can change the mindset and path in the present moment.

A lot of my self reflection happens in those few moments I get to pause, while I’m home lounging around in comfy clothes like this new lounge wear from Third Love. It’s when I can strip off any of the fictitious labels that workout clothes puts on me as a fitness blogger or influencer and I can just think for myself. It’s funny how clothing can do that to a person, but it does. We often say “here are my regular people clothes” when referring to items that are not exercise gear so I guess I’ll label my lounge wear as “my pausing from life” clothes.

Third Love recently launched loungewear which is awesome because there are days where I just don’t want to be in workout clothing and silky PJs is just a little extra. It’s made with seamless bamboo, which means no itchy seams and naturally antimicrobial to keep you dry and cool.

ThirdLove is an internet based company who utilizes tech in order to help you find the perfect bra fit from the comfort of your own home. They even offer bras with half-sized cups which is incredible because I feel like I’m one of the 50% of women who fall between standard cup sizes. To start, you can take the Fit Finder Quiz.

ThirdLove let’s you Try Before You Buy (choosing from one of their best selling bras: 24/7 Classic T-Shirt bra, 24/7 Classic Full Coverage bra or 24/7 Push Up bra) or my personal favorite the Longline Lace Balconette Bra. You just pay for shipping and try it out (even wash it) for 30 days. If you like it, you keep it and if you don’t like it, you can return it and the bra is donated to both local San Francisco charities and women’s charities through their Bras for All program where they’ve given over $1 million worth of bras to women in need since 2013.

Embracing Your Body, Embracing Movement with lululemon

My thoughts on Embracing Your Body…

Lately I’ve been finding myself in conversations surrounding self acceptance and body positivity and what that all really boils down to. It’s lead to such amazing and interesting conversations. There’s either a strong sentiment of empowerment or a hidden whisper of complacency and I feel like it can dance on a very thin line, if we allow it to. The hardest struggle that women face these days is knowing and whole heartedly accepting that they can very well love their bodies no matter what shape its in and empower themselves to change their lives should they choose to. Self acceptance is truly about having the freedom to love yourself how you want to love yourself.

Body positivity can ebb and flow. One day you might feel 100% in love with yourself and the next you might not be having the best conversations with yourself. I want you to know that’s OK! Give yourself a whole lot of grace, self forgiveness, and let go of the restrictive mindset that’s keeping you from moving forward. You’ve got all that you need within yourself.

What’s the greatest lesson a woman should learn? That since day one, she’s already had everything she needs within herself. It’s the world that convinced her she did not.

Thoughts on Embracing Movement:

Have you ever once had this dogmatic conversation with yourself around what it means or looks like to be “fit”? For years I had this perspective on what it meant to be “fit”, but always desired to have some sort of healthy and active lifestyle. Reframing the conversation with myself has been a day to day challenge, but one that I always feel empowered to overcome.

These days I’ve had the challenge of finding what forms of movement I enjoy between yoga, high intensity circuit training, or weightlifting. The challenge is partially due to making sure that I don’t injury my shoulder any further, which that in itself has given me more of a mental workout than anything. Just like how body positivity can ebb and flow from day to day, so does that inner strength when you feel like you were your most optimal condition at one point and are no longer that due to unfortunate circumstances. After having some moments of what I like to refer to as fitness commitment issues I’ve come to really learn that although I like circuit training programs like BBG, I much prefer lifting weights and getting out doors on a track for some sprints and plyometric training. It’s just the way my body loves to embrace movement. For the past few months I’ve resisted it because I felt like I was getting bored, but after spending a two weeks to get back into the swing of things I realized its just my jam.

lululemon invited me in for a personalized fit session to try their brand new Enlite Bra, specifically designed for high impact workouts. Perfect for my love for plyometrics and sprints. The personalized fit session was such a treat to experience when shopping for the right sports bra because just like any bra you want to make sure that its comfortable and is everything you need for the type of workout you love.

I love this bra because it comes in conforms perfectly to your shape and body, streamlined without bulk fabrics or hardware, and the fabric is just like butter the skin making it comfortable for all day wear. My favorite part is that it offers the high support without the feeling of compressing the girls which can leave you feeling like you're suffocating.

30 Spring Favorites under $100

While working your fitness its inevitable that your body will change. Maybe you're goal is to lose weight or to gain more muscle mass and build curves. Either way your mind and body will begin to go through change. The biggest change for me was my confidence and that meant finding new clothes that would suit that new change. I remember a time where shopping was just the most stressful thing ever. Things either never looked right or I was just seeing it through a lens of body dysmorphia and making up reasons why the clothes I tried on were just not right for me.

In the past two years a lot of my wardrobe became dri-FIT and luon. I turned into one of those women who lived, sweat, and ate in her workout wardrobe. This isn't a bad thing at all, but it got to the point where when it came to a non sweat event I struggled to redefine my style. So the past few months I've been really getting back into the swing of dressing up, shopping for non workout clothes, and shoes that were not sneakers. A couple of weeks ago I posted a photo of me in my new Cotton On stripped maxi dress, I loved the softness of the fabric and the feel of the dress that I ended up picking it up in black, which I love because it just gives the entire dress a whole different vibe.
